A letter from Al Rowwad's founder
Dear friends and supporters,
Alrowwad, Pioneers for Life, (ACTS) celebrated its 16th anniversary in March 2014 and continues to do amazing work thankfully to your support and partnership.
Beautiful Resistance helps us be better human beings; helps us continue to inspire hope and promote life in such times of despair and death; helps us continue building peace within individuals to build it in the world and shape better role models and better future for the generations to come.
The work of Alrowwad is crucial in building hope and inspiring life while incursions in Aida camp and different parts of the West Bank continue.
Since 1998, the work of Alrowwad has focused on Palestinian community priorities and needs despite the continuous incursions by Israeli occupation army in Aida refugee camp where 66 percent of the population is under 18 years old. Our activities expand locally and internationally. Partnerships and exchanges with other organizations and artistic societies develop locally and internationally. Our work continues to remain truthful to our philosophy of Beautiful Resistance to create a heritage for our children and the generations to come and you are partners in making this happen.
Alrowwad and the friends of Alrowwad, and all those who believe in us and what we do… those who believe in the power of arts, culture and education in shaping a better future for the humanity, those who believe in the importance of creating a positive and long lasting change in building hope and inspiring others, and provide an opportunity for our youth to believe that they can make miracles and change the world without need to carry a gun and shoot everybody else but to stay alive to achieve a change that we all can be proud of.
Sixteen years ago, I started ACTS with a group of friends, a theater training center for children aged 6 to 18, in two small rooms in our house in Aida refugee camp in Bethlehem, Palestine. But with the continuous degradation of the political and economic situation, we added dance, photography, video and other arts, in addition to education and a supportive education program for children with learning difficulties and trauma. We focused on women, because I believe that it’s the women who change the world. We were a small group determined to establish a safe place to inspire children with hope and encourage artistic expression as a way to survive in a world of death and despair.
During the last 16 years, we have accumulated many “firsts.” We started the first professional children's theatre program in Palestine. We've expanded to include the first photography and video training program. We opened the first fitness center for women and started the first girls’ football team in a Palestinian refugee camp, the first outdoor film festival with screening on the illegal wall of annexation and expansion, the first mobile beautiful resistance program training theatre, dance, music, painting, photography and video with games libraries in different villages and refugee camps, the first play bus mobile program in the West Bank, the first children animated radio station in Palestine (broadcasting through internet for the moment because of the cost).
Our expenses are mounting, and we can’t turn anyone away. Our play bus is not only doing activities in Bethlehem, but goes all over the West bank from the south of Hebron to the North of Jenin, in kindergartens and schools and marginalized areas. We continue with as much volunteer help as possible, but we are not able to make ends meet and respond to the increasing needs of all the children. Our plan now is to build a workshop to manufacture games with Palestinian Arab identity and which serve educational purposes.
Remain or become our partners, support our work to continue our beautiful nonviolent resistance as it defines and sustains our rights, values and integrity as human beings and creates a culture in Palestine for hope and justice.
We are at a critical point in development where we need your financial support to sustain our achievements and build with you the future.
